My Atkins Diet Story

My Atkins Diet Story

aka how one Iowa guy lost over 200 pounds and gained his life back. I can not say enough about how positively the Atkins Diet and low carb in general has been for me. I went from a 429 pound guy who could barely make it up a flight steps to a guy running half marathons and rejoining the National Guard. My health is fantastic, and my blood work (cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart) could not be better.

It is based upon the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution book (2002). The diet is obviously more extensive than I could give in a 500 char response. It has 4 phases, with the first one being more than just eating 20g or less per day. It is about eating the right 20g — check out my acceptable foods list.

The best answer I can give is read the book or start watching the Induction videos I have uploaded to get the rules and acceptable foods.

What is the atkins diet? Can you explain what you ate each day? Give me a meal plan to go by please. I would love to drop 35 pounds by the summer. Is at simple as not eating any carbs? No bread rice or cereal? Please respond I need some help.

I will because everyone have that as their new standard, and I’ll be honest with my review. Like I am more of a “3 cups per day” guy than a 12-15g from veggie fundalmentalist as volume measurement just worked or were easiest for me. My version of the 2002 book is dog-eared to the point that it’s an old friend, so I am sure it will be a good read.

There are not that many real changes. It is mostly in the presentation. It still says to start Induction with 20 net carbs with 12-15 coming from veggies, and to eat moderate protein and high fat, as usual.

One difference I see right away is that they give a chart to show how much protein you should be eating so that you don’t get too much. So there is no more of the old “Eat All You Want” stuff. If left to my own devices, I would eat 3000 calories per day! Are you getting the book?

Pretty cool to featured in the book! I just read your excerpt at booksDotGoogleDotCom of the book and watched your video. What a huge change!

I have heard good things like I said. At least better than the 2008 update version where they had whole wheat bread on the Induction sample menus! Do you know how they have changed the diet from the 2002 diet?

There is a lot of new research in the new book. And by the way, I am profiled in the book as an
    Atkins success story!

I haven’t had the pleasure yet, so until then, my gold standard is the 2002 version. I do hear good things about this version though.

You know I still get people who try to say that or that I lost all muscle and water despite my weight lifting and running performance sky-rocketing while on the diet. You can never please everyone.

This should shut those people up that want to suggest all you lose on atkins is water weight.

The length of time on the time really eliminates much of the decrease of weights. I lift more weight more times now than I did before even when I was in my early 20s. The more your body gets acclimated, the better it responds.

That’s one of the reasons I don’t do refeeds. It potentially puts your body backwards in terms of acclimation.

For the most part, my lifting on low carb is exactly like someone lifting on a high carb diet. If you are seeking a real expert, Musclehack on YT is one.

I think it would be interesting to see a video about Atkins and weightlifting, because many people on Atkins do lift weights. I returned to Low Carb on January 12 and I tried to do the cyclical ketogenic diet, but I ended up messing all up on refeeds, so I lost and regained weight, so I am only doing refeeds 2wice a mont now. The only thing I noiticed is the need to drop the weights to 80 %

Atkins is a fat / protein diet. It’s the perfect diet for building muscles. You won’t lose anything, you’ll just gain more muscle.

Sorry for the lateness of this reply — this comment fell through the cracks I guess. When I first started Atkins, I used ketone testing strips every day. It was a nice validation that I was doing everything right. You can find them at most drug stores or pharmacies like Wal-mart. They run about $6-9 for 75 strips.

They work OK. They only test for one type ketone, so they do provide some positive reinforcement. A lot of ppl get discouraged when they get a false negative or appear lighter.

No problem - I am glad I can return the favor for all those that first inspired me to lose weight on Atkins.
